Where you stay in Rome has an outsized effect on how smooth your trip feels. You can cover most of the city on foot plus the metro, and both metro lines converge at Termini Station, which also happens to be the terminus for the main airport buses and express trains.
A · Near Termini Station
The pitch: The most convenient base by far — easy in and out for the airport, and a straight shot to trains heading to other cities. The area itself is a bit rougher around the edges, so if that's a concern, aim for the western side of the station, closer to Piazza della Repubblica.
