🇦🇹Vienna Travel Guide: Imperial Palaces, Classical Music and Coffee House Culture

The former seat of the Habsburg Empire, Vienna combines imperial grandeur with a deeply ingrained musical and coffee house culture. If your idea of a good trip involves classical art and an unhurried pace, this is your city.

When to go

April–May and September–October are mild and ideal for palaces and parks. December brings the Christmas markets. January brings the New Year's Concert, which is unmissable for classical music fans but pushes flight and hotel prices up sharply — book well ahead.

What to see

Schönbrunn Palace — the Habsburg summer residence. Buy the combined ticket that includes the gardens and the maze, and reserve a slot in advance to avoid the high-season queue.

The Hofburg — the main imperial palace in the city centre, containing the Sisi Museum and the Imperial Treasury.

Vienna State Opera — you can buy a proper seat, or you can queue a few hours beforehand for a standing ticket, which is a fraction of the price and a genuinely good experience.

St Stephen's Cathedral — the city's landmark. Climb the tower for the view over the old town.

The historic coffee houses — Café Central being the famous one. Order a Viennese coffee and a slice of Sachertorte and stay a while. Nobody will rush you; that's rather the point.

Practical notes

• Classical concerts run year-round. Book through the official venue sites or an established platform — avoid the costumed ticket sellers on the street, who charge well over the odds for mediocre seats.
• Public transport is excellent. The Vienna City Card bundles transport with discounts at a number of attractions.
• Most museums close on Mondays — check opening hours before you set out.
• Vienna is consistently rated one of the safest and cleanest major cities in Europe. Normal precautions are enough.

Getting there and around

Vienna International Airport (VIE) is connected to the centre by the City Airport Train (CAT) in about 16 minutes. In town, the U-Bahn and tram networks reach nearly everything worth seeing.

Day trips

• The Wachau Valley wine region — about an hour by car, and lovely by riverboat in summer
• Bratislava, Slovakia — about an hour, and an easy second-country add-on
• Salzburg — 2.5 hours by train, doable in a long day but better with a night
